Mid-December Paradise Valley Fishing Report

Mid-December Paradise Valley Fishing Report

December Fishing Report Paradise Valley has been enjoying unseasonably warm temperatures over the last week leading to excellent winter fishing conditions throughout the Valley.  While winter conditions do persist, anglers are finding consistently feeding fish throughout the Valley on the spring creeks and in the Yellowstone River.  Most notably, post spawn brown trout, nymphing has been the most consistent technique.  Additionally, there are some fish being taken on swung streamers. Look for fish in deep stable pools and runs.  Fish them deeply and slowly either suspended under an indicator or by utilizing tight line Euro nymphing techniques where conditions allow. On the Yellowstone River a stone fly nymph with a blow torch dropper has been productive as has slowly swung and stripped streamers  On Nelson's, Depuy's and Armstrong's...

Creekside: Dusting Off the Vise

Creekside: Dusting Off the Vise

Every November, as fall continues its transition to winter, I begin my yearly migration to my fly-tying desk. It is at times exciting and at other times daunting. You see, the process of tying flies is very pleasant, but the volume of work -completed 1 fly at a time - can seem insurmountable at times. It all starts with a review of the field notebook from seasons past on the flies we’ve used successfully, and what might be needed for winter. From there, I inventory hooks, beads, and various materials. Bits and bobs to be lashed to iron all in the hopes of convincing a fish it is food. The great value of which is catching these fish on something I’ve fashioned myself, maybe even from a soft-hackled feather of a grey partridge my dog and I have taken during the fall. Occasionally, a blind squirrel finds a nut. Once my list of flies and...

November 2023 Fishing Report

November 2023 Fishing Report

Week of November 6, 2023 Fishing Report  We are still seeing a fair amount of fall baetis around with fish rising to emergers and cripples beginning around 10:30am weather dependent. Rising fish can be targeted nicely during this hatch with a low riding dun, emerger or cripple pattern with a nymph /emerger dropper.   Patterns: Snow shoe Baetis #22, Last Chance Cripple – BWO 20-22, Brooks Sprout Baetis 20-24, Cripple Thor 22. CDC Baetis 20-22, Harrop's Hanging midge 20-22. Nymphing has been very productive on the fall run of brown trout. We’ve been pairing a hot beaded scud or sow bug with a baetis nymph or midge very successfully over the last week. We’ve focused our attention on deep stable pools and below the spawning beds where we are picking up some decent rainbows. Both suspension nymphing at various depths and Euro nymphing...

Fall Transitions to Winter

Fall Transitions to Winter

We turned the clocks back this last week. While this is a largely ceremonial task, it's got us thinking about the transition from fall to winter. We are still fishing the creek and are enjoying hosting and guiding many visitors who have come to fish the late fall/early winter run of brown trout and the fall baetis hatch.    Things have slowed a bit from the frenetic pace of spring and summer to a relaxed rhythm. This is evidenced by the natural life around the spring creeks.  At this time of year, they are the most consistent places to fish for trout and specifically to target trophy class fish.  We see some beautiful fish this time of year in all sizes, shapes and colors. The fishing itself is a heady combination of weather, relative solitude, baetis hatches, and the anticipated tug of fish heavy with a season of growth and feeding...
