What to Bring on a

Guided Fly Fishing Trip

Here in Montana we say, “If you don’t like the weather in Montana, just wait five minutes”. Keep that in mind when packing for your upcoming fishing trip. Here are some tips for what type of equipment to bring depending on where you plan to be fishing. Don’t sweat, we have you covered for all your equipment and clothing needs at the S|N Fly Shop location on the Nelson’s Spring Creek Ranch.

Wet wading in Yellowstone National Park and on the Yellowstone River is very pleasant. However, one should be prepared for those unpleasant cold and wet days we get in Montana. Therefore, bring plenty of warm clothes, a rain jacket, fishing hat, sunscreen and polarized sunglasses. If wading wet, we recommend wearing a pair of wading boots with neoprene guard socks or strap-on wading sandals.

Spring creek water is a very cold 48 degrees and waders are preferred. In order to make the waders more comfortable on the hot summer days wear wader wick long johns underneath as opposed to jeans.

For Spring Creek fishing we recommend a 9 foot 4 weight rod with a supple tip. Slower action rods tend to protect light tippet better, which results in more fish landed and less flies lost. We will be using 9′ 4x, or 9′ 5x, leaders and extend the leader length to approximately 13 feet with tippet going down as low as 7x.

For fishing in Yellowstone National Park, the Yellowstone River, or local lakes we recommend a 9 foot 5 or 6 weight rod. The action of the rod should be medium fast to fast. The faster action helps you make longer cast and cut through the wind. These rods are not as supple, but we will not be using delicate tippets.
