2020 has not been normal. The COVID-19 craziness has slowed our guiding to a halt. Instead of inspecting the daily trout menu of baetis and midges, we’re washing hands and social distancing. Since the “flattening of the curve” and the phased reopening of the state we are starting to see an uptick in day fisherman. The fish on the creek have been well rested, and although we’ve been following guidelines, the fish have still been gorging on their daily fare.
Nelson’s Spring Creek is getting daily activity of midges in the mornings and evenings and baetis mid day. The fish have not seen much pressure, but they are still educated spring creek fish and stealthy presentations along with proper fly selection are key to success. The hot nymphs have been red and green midge larva, zebra midges, dark pheasant tails, and scuds. Recommended dry flies are black midge adults, baetis emergers, sparkle duns and duns. All of the flies along with any other essential tackle can be purchased at the S|N Fly Shop when you check in.
The Yellowstone River has been running muddy with spring runoff. However, the cooled temps we are getting may bring it back into shape for some last chance caddis fishing. We have a wide selection of caddis flies at the S|N Fly Shop and would be happy to set you up. Please call ahead before coming to the shop to make sure we’re around. Jacquie can be reached at 406-579-9982.
Our guide schedules have opened up through mid June. Usually we are booked up this time of year, but due to the COVID-19 restrictions we’ve had many cancellations. If you’d like to learn more about technical spring creek fishing (Nelson’s, Armstong’s, Depuy’s), or sneak in a caddis hatch float on the Yellowstone, please give us a call. We also do trips to the Madison River, local lakes, and if conditions are right the Boulder River. Don’t miss this opportunity to fish with either Tucker or Jacquie!
